Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of educational background and previous job experience should I have to work at SORC?

The minimum education requirements are a high school education or GED.

How would you describe this job?

As a start, here are some phrases provided by our Dispatches: "Our most important task is to do everything possible to ensure the safety of our officers, firefighters and EMTs."  "It is also a job that allows you to discover qualities and potential within yourself that other less challenging jobs would never bring out. It’s NOT your ordinary desk job!"

Am I expected to already know how to run all the electronic dispatch equipment?

No. We have a comprehensive training program to teach you all you need to know about how to use the equipment and how to interact with the 9-1-1 caller. Our program teaches you many new skills and, at the same time, helps you become better at skills you already have.

Your dispatchers work in shifts, right?

Yes. We are open all the time, 24 hours a day, all year. Since the citizens of Jackson County expect us to be there when they have an emergency, we expect our employees to be at the dispatch console for their shift. Shift work is required and, after training is complete, schedules are selected based on seniority.

How long is your training program?

It depends on your skill and experience level but normally 6 to 8 months.

Do you have a good pay and benefits package?

Absolutely. The starting salary and the salary after training are excellent. Regarding benefits, we provide a generous benefits package.

I have worked for another Emergency Service Agency. May I apply?

Absolutely!

I have a strong work ethic and love to have a lot of things going on at the same time. Are you looking for people with these skills? What other skills should I have?

Yes, those are important skills for a 9-1-1 Dispatcher. In addition, good short term memory and good old common sense are other important attributes.

It seems like it would be a stressful job, is that correct?

Yes, at times, but you will be taught how to handle emergent and non emergent calls, as well as how to dispatch police, fire and medical.  These training tools, along with experience can help reduce your stress.  However; you need to be aware that the nature of the job itself, is stressful.

I am bilingual. Is this required?

No, it is not required.

Do you do a background check with law enforcement agencies on applicants?

Yes. Unfortunately, individuals with a felony on their record will not be eligible for employment.
